Dry Needling

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a technique used by trained and skilled physical therapist that employs the use of a filiform needle, like those used with acupuncture, that is placed into either muscle or connective tissue. The needle is driven into the target tissue.
Yes! That pesky tight and tender spot that you keep rubbing that hurts so good when you put pressure on it. That is the one we are aiming for! Once the needle is inserted, a localized twitch response can occur which can alter the length and tension in the muscle fiber. This technique can also generate improved blood flow to the tissue and create a neuromuscular reaction effectively allowing the muscle to “reset”. Just like restarting your phone or computer, dry needling is a reboot of the muscle fiber tissue. This can lead to less tension, decreased pain, and improved joint range of motion.

DO I need Dry needling?

We recommend dry needling for individuals who have difficulty with trigger point pain in certain regions of their body. People that have tension in their neck or shoulders, headaches, those that have trouble with flexibility, and individials who suffer with chronic pain. Dry needling can alter their pain cycle, decrease tension, and improve flexibility.

Does IT hurt?

Good question. The responses vary from person to person. The average person will report a feeling of a deep ache when the needle enters the trigger point. Once the needle is removed, most of the discomfort resolves. The majority of people describe a feeling of discomfort for up to a few hours afterwards but the benefits of the needling are immediate and can occur within the first 24 hours.

Do I need a Doctor's referral & Does insurance pay for it?

No, a doctor's referral is not necessary and if you would like a dry needling session, we can provide your care. In most cases, insurance carriers are not covering dry needling. This is typically an out-of-pocket expense for guests and patients. Please contact your insurance company to find out your coverage details.

How many Dry Needling sessions Do I need?

It depends on the individual case. Some people like to return at regular intervals for maintenance and management. Some people like to come to a few sessions weekly to maximize benefit and others are satisfied with one treatment.
